Counselling and psychotherapy is a unique experience
What is the difference between Psychotherapy and counsellinG
Nothing. You will see these terms used in a variety of ways, by different people, to describe what is essentially a talking therapy. Let's refer to it as therapy.
Why do people go to therapy
People seek out help for many reasons. There is no rule for what you should and should not attend therapy for. It may be a feeling or experience you can describe and label, something extremely painful, mental or physical, or just a sense something isn't right. If you feel you need help therapy could be for you.
Here are examples of some issues I have worked with:
- Fear and anxiety, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic attacks
- Sadness and depression, including postnatal depression
- Low self-esteem or confidence
- Relationship issues and difficulties
- Family issues
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- The end of a relationship, separation and divorce
- Feeling confused, indecisive, stuck
- Feeling chaotic, overwhelmed, out of control
- A sense of un-fulfillment
- Shame, guilt and anger
- Feeling suicidal
- Sexual abuse
What will it be like
Therapy is a unique experience, where you can explore your world within a non-judgemental, empathic, trusting and confidential relationship. From here, you'll gain greater awareness and understanding of yourself, the patterns of your thoughts and behaviours and where new choices can be found.
There are many therapeutic approaches, hundreds, a whole world of techniques and theories use by therapists. Interestingly, research has shown the most important aspect of therapy to be the therapeutic nature of the relationship between you and the therapist, rather than a specific technique or theory. In the end, it is about finding the therapist that works for you.

How long will I need therapy and how often do I attend
Sessions are once a week and last 50 minutes. There is no limit to how long or short therapy can be. It can range from a few weeks to a number of years. We'll regularly review how the therapy is progressing, and it will be your choice as to however long or short you wish to stay.
What happens in the first session
We'll look at what brought you to therapy, what you would like to achieve, and get a sense of whether we can work together. It's an opportunity for you to ask me questions and decide whether you feel comfortable with how I work.

MY QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist. I have a foundation degree in counselling, and diplomas in therapeutic counselling and relational mindfulness. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and have been working as a therapist for more than three years. The BACP is the largest professional body representing counselling and psychotherapy in the UK. They set the standards, values, and ethical guidelines by which therapists work to.
You could say I've been training for this role all my adult life, learning about myself and other people. I've also worked as a mentor, harassment and bullying advisor, Mental Health First Aider, and developed a mental health peer support group.

It's a bit of a mouthful - what does it mean?
I believe the healing quality of the relationship, between client and therapist, is the essential element for helping you experience a more rich and meaningful life. Together, we'll bring awareness to how your mind and body works and the thoughts and feelings you are struggling with. I'll help you bring acceptance by supporting you with how you relate to your experiences, and we'll work together on the change you'd like to see. If you wish, we can use mindfulness activities during the session, or discuss goals for you outside of our work. As part of my therapeutic approach I draw on my experience of Psychodynamic and Person centred theory, Acceptance and commitment therapy, Mindfulness based cognitive therapy, and follow the latest neuroscience developments to enhance the effectiveness of my practice.
Each session is 50 minutes in duration. Our initial session, which we'll use to find out whether we would like to work together, is £35.
Each session after the initial consultation is £50.

2016 will be the year virtual reality gets fun, and serious. It has huge therapeutic potential; by allowing us to experience a virtual world as something real. Through this we can develop self-compassion, face our fears, and build our empathy. But there is a darker side too.
Therapy often involves a search for who you really are, and how you want to live your life. The path to this answer can be challenging, but the reward potentially liberating.
